Training

Respond!'s Education and Consultancy Department manages the strategic development and implementation of education services for Respond! Housing Association with the aim of empowering people and leading the development of learning within the social housing sector. Through identifying and analysing key topics and initiatives that are critical to current thinking about community development and in particular social housing this department aims to develop, plan and implement Respond!’s education strategies for housing professionals, local authorities, Respond! tenants and other groups. All of the courses follow the principle of lifelong learning. TRAINING SEMINARS
Respond! is the only agent in Ireland delivering training and education courses for the Chartered Institute of Housing, an organisation well established in Housing and Community training.

Certificate in Housing
CIH accredited Certificate in Housing (Level 2)
Over six sessions (2pm-7.30pm), students will gain a broad understanding of housing policy and practice and will be introduced to some of the skills necessary for work in the housing and community sector. There will be no exams; student learning will be assessed through assignments and a short presentation. The teaching methods used will be a mix of lecture style delivery, discussion, small group work and experiential exercises.

The aims of the Certificate in Housing are:
  • To provide students with a basic understanding of housing policy and practice in Ireland

  • To introduce students to some of the skills necessary to participate in housing related activities (either paid or voluntary)

  • To begin a social analysis on housing and community issues

  • To prepare students for future learning, employment or voluntary work

Content covered includes:
  • Understanding housing provision and practice in Ireland (housing legislation, housing tenures, managing anti-social behavior, rent arrears management, etc)

  • Developing skills for housing and community work

  • Community development and tenant participation

  • Trends and issues in housing (e.g. repossessions, regeneration, affordable housing)

Venue: Respond!, Oranmore, Galway.
Cost: €595. This includes all materials and CIH membership for the duration of the course.

  • People working or volunteering in housing who wish to gain an official qualification

  • People working in a community setting who wish to learn more about housing

  • People who would like to learn more about housing policy and practice

Respond! is delighted to launch our FETAC accredited Major Award at level 5:
Certificate in Applied Social Studies (with a focus on housing)

This course provides students with
  • An understanding of housing policy, legislation and practice

  • An opportunity to practice skills necessary for housing and community work

  • Discussion and debate on core themes in social housing, including housing rights, tenure types, tenant participation and housing finance

  • An exploration of concepts of community and community development

  • An analysis of homelessness and an introduction to key legislation in this areas

  • Interculturalism and housing

  • An introduction to political and social studies

This course will be delivered in High Park, Drumcondra, Dublin 9 for two days per month from September 2010 until May 2011.
