Mill Court in Greenmill Lane, Portlaoise was designed by Respond Housing Association and contructed by Carrol O’Keeffe & Co Ltd in 2009. The estate was built with the support of Laois County Council and was kindly funded by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. This is an integrated estate of 22 family homes and homes for older persons, as well as communal facilities.
The community building in the estate hosts a variety of activities for residents including fitness classes, educational courses, estate meetings etc. Presently, Respond Housing Association is running a NUI Maynooth accredited Community Development Course in the building every third Friday adn Saturday with 20 residents participating. On Wednesday afternoons, the “Falite Isteach” program takes place; a two hour session to teach foreign nationals English conversation. This program has 10 volunteer tutors selected from the community and 40 foreign nationals attending. This course caters for people who just want to touch up on tenses to people that cannot speak any English. The applicants are put into groups to suit their level and given work to bring home and learn for the following session.
