Gleann na Bearú was designed by Respond Housing Association and built by Thomas Kelly & Sons contractors with the support of Carlow County Council and with funding from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. Completed in two phases in 2007 and 2008, the estate contains 133 homes including five 2-bed houses, seven 3-bed houses, fifteen 2-bed bungalows, seven 2-bed apartments, two 9-bed group homes, sixty-two Local Authority houses and nineteen affordable houses. With a community building located in the heart of the estate, activitites that take place there include VEC classes, a Men’s Club and Bingo. There is also a joint initiative with Carlow Youth Services to establish a youth club for the estate and surrounding area.
