Sixteen of Respond’s residents, staff and staff from local care services recently completed a FETAC Level 5 component award in Care of the Older Person. Learners for this FETAC component award in Care of the Older Person came mainly from estates in the Cork City and County area and the Respond estates in this cluster.
This eight week course was delivered by tutors from Respond College namely Sarah Barron, Camilla Fitzsimons and Philip O’Reilly, Respond National Co ordinator of Services for Older People.
The overall aim of the course was to engage with Respond residents in the Cork region and to “equip them with the knowledge and skills required to provide care for older people in a variety of settings” (FETAC descriptor).
The course was run from Curaheen Community building in Cork with participants drawn from Respond estates in the county and care services in the locality. The reason the course was chosen for this region was because it suited the profile and the perceived interests of the residents best.
The course itself adopted a learner-centred approach. The teaching style adopted was participatory, experiential and hands on.

In order to complete the course learners were required to complete two pieces of assessment: A skills demonstration –which included a work placement of a minimum of 10 hours and a project around care for an older person with specific needs.
